Sunscreen is one of the most important steps in skincare, yet applying it every morning does not automatically mean your skin is fully protected. Using too little, forgetting to reapply or relying on makeup with SPF can all make a difference. In Malaysia’s sunny climate, getting these basics right matters more than adding another product to your shelf.
Applying Too Little
A light layer may feel more comfortable under makeup, but using too little sunscreen can reduce the protection you receive. Apply a generous, even amount to your face, including your hairline, ears and neck. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and follow the directions on its label.
Applying Once and Forgetting
Your morning application is only the beginning. When outdoors, reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours, and sooner after swimming, sweating or towel-drying your skin. A higher SPF does not remove the need to reapply.
Makeup with SPF can offer additional protection, but it should not replace your dedicated sunscreen. Foundation and tinted moisturizer are often applied too sparingly to provide the protection stated on their labels, so apply sunscreen as a separate step before makeup.
Cloudy skies are no reason to skip sun protection, either. Ultraviolet rays can still reach your skin when the sun is hidden, so keep sunscreen in your routine even on overcast days. When outdoors, complement it with shade, sunglasses and protective clothing.
Make Consistency Your Best Skincare Habit
You do not need a complicated routine to protect your skin. Choose a sunscreen you enjoy wearing, apply it properly and remember to reapply when needed.
The best sunscreen routine is not about chasing the highest SPF or adding more steps. It is about using adequate protection consistently, every day, alongside other sun-safe habits.
